SOCIAL NEEDS & OUTREACH
Our Social Needs and Outreach Committee works behinds the scenes to help people throughout the community. Projects include helping residents in South County pay bills such as rent and utilities that cannot otherwise be met, providing food for those in need, providing funding for backpacks and school supplies and meals for students who would otherwise go without. This committee also hosts luncheons for seniors, collects Christmas shoeboxes for children overseas, provides Thanksgiving baskets for needy families, provides Christmas presents for needy children, hosts Red Cross blood drives and chairs the annual church yard sale which provides funds for its outreach ministry such as the South County Food Bank and the Good News Jailhouse Ministry.
The Social Needs and Outreach committee of DUMC will be participating in the summer breakfast club for children who would not have a healthy breakfast otherwise over the summer months. The program is based out of Mt Zion Methodist Church in Lothian and has been in existence for many years. Last year they served over 160 children and the numbers are expected to increase this year. We will be providing some funding for the project and a number of our members will be helping with preparation of the breakfasts and their delivery which occurs Monday thru Friday, June 20-August 12. We would like to enhance the program by providing gently used books to the children to assure they have the opportunity to continue reading over the summer. If you have books that would be appropriate for children up to age 17, please leave them in the box in the fellowship hall by July 31 or let Marie Simpson, 410-703-3294, or other members know how we can help you transport them.
Social Needs annual Yard Sale is Saturday, October 8th from 8-12 in the fellowship hall. Items can be dropped off at the church the week before on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9am-noon and 5pm-7pm. Items can also be left on the ramp beside the kitchen door at other hours.
